A good business idea in Kosovo isn't necessarily the most original one. It's the one with customers who pay regularly, costs you can cover and a reason people would buy from you rather than a competitor. Below are 15 ideas with a real market, grouped by type.
Services for the diaspora
The diaspora sends hundreds of millions of euros every year and comes home in large numbers in summer and over the holidays. Many of its needs are still poorly served.
- Managing apartments and houses. Letting, cleaning, repairs and bill payments for owners who live abroad. Clients pay for trust and regular reporting.
- Car rental and airport transfers. Huge demand in July and August. Needs a transport licence and specific insurance.
- Administrative services. Documents, registrations, dealing with institutions. See Starting a business in Kosovo from the diaspora.
Technology and professional services
- Programming and IT for foreign clients. Kosovo has young developers and lower costs than Western Europe. Many start as freelancers and grow into an LLC. See Freelancing in Kosovo.
- Bookkeeping for small businesses. Every business has monthly ATK obligations and most don't want to handle them alone.
- Digital marketing and design. Many local businesses still lack a website, an up-to-date profile or good product photos.
Food and hospitality
- A small bakery or pastry shop. A daily product with repeat customers. Needs hygienic premises and registration with the Food and Veterinary Agency.
- Ready meals and office catering. Offices in Prishtina, Prizren and Peja want quick, healthy lunches.
- A café with a clear concept. The market is crowded, so the difference has to be obvious: location, specialty coffee or food. See How to open a café or restaurant.
Farming and production
- Processing wild fruit. Raspberries, blueberries and chestnuts are mostly exported unprocessed. Freezing, packaging and jam add value.
- Greenhouses and off-season vegetables. With Ministry of Agriculture subsidies and steady demand from supermarkets. See Grants and subsidies for businesses.
- Agritourism. Village guesthouses, traditional food and outdoor activities, especially in Rugova, Brezovica and Dukagjin.
Local services with constant demand
- Installing solar panels. Energy prices and prosumer schemes have raised demand from households and businesses.
- Professional cleaning. Offices, apartments after renovation, shops. Small investment, clients on monthly contracts.
- A private kindergarten or learning centre. There aren't enough places in public kindergartens, and demand for languages and coding is growing. Needs a licence from the Ministry of Education.
Before you pick an idea
- Check the competition. On Kerko search your activity and municipality: how many businesses there are, how old they are and how many have closed. A market with many closures is a warning sign.
- Work out your break-even point. How much do you need to sell each month to cover rent, wages and taxes? See How to write a business plan.
- Pick a legal form. For most small ideas an Individual Business is enough; with partners or more risk, an LLC. See Individual business or LLC?.
- Check licences. See Business licences and permits.
When you're ready, ARBK registration usually takes a few days. The steps are in Registering an individual business and How to open an LLC.
Frequently asked questions
Which businesses do best in Kosovo?
There is no single answer, but businesses that serve a repeated need (food, repairs, diaspora services, IT for foreign clients) have a steadier market than ones that depend on trends.
What business can I start with little money?
Services where you sell your own work, such as accounting, programming, design, cleaning or tutoring, need a small investment and can start as an Individual Business.
Does every business need a licence?
No. Most activities only need ARBK registration. A licence is needed for regulated activities such as healthcare, education, transport, food and construction.
How can I check the competition before starting?
On Kerko you can search businesses by activity and municipality to see how many there are, how long they have operated and how many have closed.
